Davidoff Yamasa Cigar and Woodford Reserve Celebration

Celebrating New Beginnings with Davidoff Yamasa & Woodford Reserve

Today marks a significant milestone – the official completion of the purchase of our new apartment! To celebrate this momentous occasion, I've chosen a special cigar: the Davidoff Yamasa in the 5x48 vitola, which I plan to pair with a distinguished Woodford Reserve.

First impressions of the Yamasa are of impeccable quality. The wrapper is perfect, displaying only a few delicate veins and a vibrant brown hue with a beautiful sheen of oils. The construction feels robust and expertly rolled, promising a satisfying experience, although I do note that the draw feels a touch firm, something I'll be observing as I smoke.

Bringing the cigar to my nose, the aroma from the body is fine and elegant. I detect notes of wood, a subtle spiciness, and a creamy sweetness reminiscent of maple honey. The foot, in contrast, presents a much spicier profile, with notes of pepper, dried chili, and fertile earth. The cold draw confirms the slightly tight but smooth draw, leaving a pleasant oily sensation and a delicious spicy aftertaste on my lips and the tip of my tongue.

Upon lighting, the initial combustion was a little hesitant, with minimal smoke production. I suspect this might be due to the slightly tighter draw. However, it wasn't long before that quintessential Davidoff mustiness I've come to appreciate emerged. By the third puff, the body felt strong, and the presence of tannins was evident, causing a pleasant salivation.

The Yamasa tobacco truly shines in this cigar. There are unique notes that are difficult to pinpoint, perhaps a slightly chemical yet pleasant characteristic, almost menthol-like. The initial puffs offer a strong start, with spicy and woody notes accompanied by a noticeable tingling sensation on the tip of my tongue. This is precisely the experience I had hoped for – a Davidoff with both body and character.

As I reach the end of the first third, the initial spiciness recedes slightly, allowing notes of cacao and wood to come forward, though a pleasant pepperiness and that intriguing tingling sensation linger throughout my mouth. Based on this initial experience, I can certainly see the Davidoff Yamasa becoming a regular in my rotation. The flavours are dynamic, and the quality is undeniably high.

For context on my ratings, my personal scale for a cigar experience is as follows:

  • No lo vuelvo a fumar: I will not smoke this cigar again.

  • Lo fumo si me lo regalan: I will smoke it if it is gifted to me, but I won't purchase it myself.

  • Me compro un 5 pack: I would purchase a 5-pack to have on hand.

  • Me compro una caja: I will definitely purchase a full box of this cigar.

Based on my initial impressions, my rating for the Davidoff Yamasa is a resounding "Me compro una caja".
